to personality.
A clear view of one face works best. Review the likeness of both expressions before letting your character perform.
Choose your face
Pick a photo from Photos or Files. Choose Create 3D cartoon, review the generation notice, then press Create my 3D portrait with Apple to open Apple's editor on a supported device.
Match the expressions
Accept a happy portrait, then create the unhappy version. Keep the same person, pose, framing, and lighting. Review the pair and choose Use expressions.
Open. Fold. Repeat.

Quick help
A few useful
answers.
If you email us, include your device model, system version, app version, and what happened. Only share a personal photo if you are comfortable doing so.
How do I use the real hinge?
On iPhone Duo with iOS 27.1 or later, enable Use real device hinge. The portrait occupies the right physical panel when open and the available screen when folded.
On other supported devices, use the manual angle control. Tap Controls to reveal it on a folded or narrow screen.
Why is Apple image generation unavailable?
Image Playground needs compatible Apple Intelligence hardware, supported language and region settings, and service availability. Apple manages generation limits. The app checks availability before offering the editor.
The app interface is currently English. Worldwide App Store distribution does not make Apple's generation service available in every region. You can use the illustrated mascot and manual controls without generation.
What if the faces don't match?
Try a clear, front-facing photo with a visible mouth. Keep the happy and unhappy artwork close in pose and framing. If the pair cannot be matched, choose another image or use the mascot.
The portrait's expression changes around the mouth; eyes, brows, glasses, and headwear stay steady. It is a 2D effect made from reviewed artwork.
Where are sound and haptic settings?
Open About and settings for sound and haptic settings. Sound respects Silent Mode. Haptic reactions require supported physical iPhone hardware.
Can I save the animation?
Export happy, Export unhappy, and Save cartoon save still PNG images. The live effect does not export as a GIF, video, or 3D model.
If a saved image is missing, check the destination you selected in Files.
How do I remove my photos?
Remove or replace the active portrait, or quit the app, to clear its session. Backgrounding alone does not clear it. Exported images remain in the location you chose; delete them there separately. Your original Photos and Files items are not changed.
